Welcome aboard! This page will supplement your official orientation with basic information and helpful resources. Your mentor, supervisor, or assistant should have explained the most important topics.

Things to Do

First Day Tasks

  1. Get your One Card.
  2. Create your Onyen (aka your username for UNC)
    • If you receive an error that your PID is inactive, please contact your HR representative.
  3. Activate your UNC email address
    • Click on “Email Sign-Up”
    • Average time: 20 minutes, but can take an hour
  4. Set up 2-step Verification for Duo – required for Onyen management, Connect Carolina, and UNC’s VPN
    • Click on the green Duo tile and follow the instructions.
  5. Set up 2-step Verification for Office 365 – required for all Office products, including Outlook
    • Username format: onyen@ad.unc.edu
  6. Update your office address and phone number in Connect Carolina under Personal Information.
  7. Request a web profile at Gillings
  8. Send a photo and brief bio for the website to Rhoda Cerny.
    • In this email, please ask to be added to the meetings and mailing lists relevant to your position.


First Day/Week Meetings

  • Doris Dworschak, ESE Business Manager, 166 Rosenau
    • Staff – meet her after orientation to fill out systems access forms and find out any extra training requirements
    • Faculty – meet with her and pre/post award staff for orientation into grant application and management processes

    • Pick up office/lab keys
    • Learn where your mailbox is

Organization/Official Names

Institution: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC, or UNC-CH)
School: Gillings School of Global Public Health (GSGPH) – You will see SPH used but it is not the official designation.
Department: Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, (ESE; listed for courses as ENVR)

Our department has space in five buildings:

  • McGavran-Greenberg Hall
  • Michael Hooker Research Center
  • Baity Labs, and
  • 1700 MLK Blvd.

You will most likely spend all your time in the first three. If you’re lost and no one is around, try the floor plans! See the keys page to request keys or electronic access to the buildings or Hooker lab wing.

Parking and Transportation

Parking on Campus

Rhoda Cerny is ESE’s Parking Coordinator; contact her if you plan to park on campus. For information on parking lots, weeknight parking, rules, etc., please see Employee Parking.

Park and Ride

Explore your options for local and regional park and ride lots; some require permits.

Buses

UNC’s transit map shows all bus routes that serve campus. The map links to the various transit authorities.

Chapel Hill Transit buses are free.

Register with the Commuter Alternative Program (CAP) to sign up for a free regional bus pass, explore carpool, biking and walking options, and receive benefits at local businesses.


Food

There is a small cafe in the Hooker Atrium which carries salads, burritos, sandwiches, and snacks. There is also a coffee shop in the Health Sciences Library across S Columbia Street. For a larger variety, try the Beach Cafe in Brinkhous-Bullitt. The easiest way to get there is by going through Bondurant Hall.
